NEW: Letter to the radio stations re-broadcasting Vatican Radio's programmes through the Intelsat satellite, 902 @ 62.0° E (Indian Region)

Vatican City, 29th November 2007

Dear colleagues and friends,

I have pleasure to inform you that Vatican Radio has signed a partnership agreement with the Italian-based company "Telespazio S.p.A", one of the world leaders in the satellite services, concerning the feeding of Vatican Radio's programmes through the satellite.

As a consequence of the above-mentioned agreement, aimed to improve the telecommunication infrastructures used by Vatican Radio, the broadcast services currently operated via the Intelsat satellite, 902 @ 62.0° E (IOR) has moved to the Intelsat 904 @ 60.0° E (IOR).

The new Vatican Radio broadcast service, covering the Indian region, is configured with an up-link antenna, located in Telespazio site of "Fucino Space Centre" and all the receiving stations re-pointed on Intelsat 904 @ 60.0° E (IOR).

Therefore, even your radio station has to re-point its antenna over the new satellite Intelsat 904 @ 60.0° E, according your location.

The moving from the Intelsat 902 @ 62.0° E to Intelsat 904 @ 60.0° E is carried out in a smooth way, throughout a dual feed on both the satellites for a period of two months and half, in order to minimize eventual uneasiness from the receiving stations. Consequently, you have to complete the passage to the new satellite by 15th February 2008. As from this date, the satellite Intelsat 902 @ 62.0° E will be switched off.

To calculate the new pointing data of your antenna and to re-program the receiver ABR 200 or ABR 202, we invite you to follow Telespazio procedure, available, as an attachment, at the following address: www.telespazio.it (select "Business Services" on the right side of the Telespazio's homepage and, then, click onto "Vatican Radio"). A simple program, issued by Intelsat, to help you in calculating the new pointing data, is provided along with the procedure.

Telespazio has activated a help desk remote service for all the technical needs that receiving stations may have. This service, which will be operating until 15th February 2008, is available 7 days per week, 24 hrs. per day, at the following telephone number: +39 0863 550 231/233.

However, in case of need, Vatican Radio's Technical Dept. is at your disposal for additional information and requirements on the matter. The contact person is Mr. Paolo Folco (Monday - Friday, from 6.00 to 15.30 hrs. UTC), telephone +39 06 698 83394, mobile +39 335 1046029, p.folco@vatrd.org

These are the modalities concerning the activation of the new broadcast service. I apologize in advance if they may cause eventual inconveniences to you. However, as I said, this slight change goes towards a technological improvement of our satellite transmissions and our mutual cooperation is important to sustain each other in accomplishing our mission.

In this view, I would like to take advantage of this communication to express our gratitude for re-broadcasting regularly the programmes of Vatican Radio. Thanks to the collaboration of many national and local broadcasters, our programmes may be indeed broadcasted worldwide. To this effect, I confirm that the International Relations Office of Vatican Radio (telephone +39 06 698 83945, fax +39 06 698 83237, relint@vatiradio.va) is always ready to meet your needs for any query concerning the cooperation in re-broadcasting our programmes.

Yours truly

Fr. Federico Lombardi SI
Director General of Vatican Radio
